Required Reading
Not that Rebecca Blood needs any more links from me, but as I start to put together a blogging directory, some choices for the online library are obvious, such as Rebecca's Weblog History essay.

Background Blogging
Just stumbled across this post in Mark Bernstein's blog about the differences between foreground and background material in blog writing:
Background material forms part of the weblog gift economy. Blogrolls, gift lists, book notes, music links -- none of these are compelling in isolation, but together the form a base for clustering, community, and consensus.
...and yes, I know, I still haven't discussed blogrolling. I'm working on it!

Meanwhile, I'm also trying to wrap my mind around Tinderbox. It seems like it might feature a lot of the key elements of my PEP fantasy.

While I'm in the neighborhood, I should also mention Weblog Kitchen, a resource that probably makes this blog of mine superfluous!

Channel for Radio FAQs
The indefatigable dws has launched a dynamic Radio FAQ channel. To participate, he says, start a RadioQuestions channel on your blog and tell him about it. He's aggregating the questions, answering them when he can, and other wise putting out word so that others can answer what's left.

My first question would be, how do you subscribe to the RSS feed for a single channel? For that matter, is it possible to beam different channels to different hosts (it seems to be but I don't see anything like that in the Radio interface). Also, is it possible to use the Manila-Blogger bridge to send just one channel to Blogger API site. Lastly, why aren't headings showing up in my relay site?

Content Networking
When I get a moment I'd like to discuss the issue of collaboration, whether through team posting as Blogger permits or through collaborative weblogs such as Metafilter, Slashdot, and Plastic. (It amused me that some of the Slashdot folks object to the popularity of blogging without realizing that their own home site is considered by many to be a community weblog.)

In the meantime, here's a MeFi post that links to an interesting content-linking experiment:

posted by nomisxid August 1 1:40 PM. Tangent.cx is now online. Endquote first came up with a concept for automating self-linking within his own blog. Now he's expanded the idea so that you can build a network of content-driven-sites that auto-link their content with your own. The niftiest part, to me, is his new link pop-up menus, so that one word can link to articles from multiple sites. [MetaFilter]

Radio Static, Radio Silence
This morning Radio is stripping the headings off my posts (probably messing up the mirror too), and generating this error:
[Macro error: The file "08" wasn't found.]
Guessing that this has something to do with the change of month and the fact that Radio's been running continually on my desktop through several sleep cycles. I just quit and restarted the server to see if that will help.

...ok, that along didn't do it. I see that none of my posts today are streaming out to the Salon Blogs server. On a hunch I poked around my www/2002/ folder and saw that there is an 07 (month) folder, but no 08. I created an 08 folder (though I'm sure I shouldn't have to do that by hand), and now I'm going to see if posting works.

If not, I'll restart the machine (maybe some handling component crashed overnight). If that fails, I'll have to get some technical support!

Smells Like Dead Cow
bOing bOing features a pointer today to the "Cult of the Dead Cow" hax0r blog. Find out how Rush Limbaugh avoided service in Vietnam! Say, don't these guys have a book deal with No Starch?

Reports of Her Demise Were Exaggerated
Scripting News reports that Burning Bird is back. This may be a record for shortest "I quit" hiatus.

What I find interesting is that we can become prisoners of our habits, good and bad. BB listed several reasons why she has resumed blogging and quoted from a piece of advice she received. Essentially, it reminded her that she can do as much or as little of this as she wants, and partake of as much or as little of the habits, customs, and cultures of blogging today as she wants.

Part of the joy of this time we live in is that we are making our own rules. Don't look over your shoulder too much or aim to duplicate someone else's idea or performance. Be yourself, express yourself, enjoy yourself.
