More Loaded Pilots
CNN.com reports that Mesa Airlines fired a pilot who tested positive for drinking:
The incident follows two other cases involving commercial pilots allegedly drinking before flying. categories: memewatch

In its "Other Websites" section, under the odd heading of "Peacebloggers," Slate gives a short blurb to the Blogcritics project, a site of book, music, film and other reviews entirely by bloggers.

Hey, wasn't it the free LPs and movie tickets—and eventually the ad buys for so-called alternative music—that killed the 'zine movement?

An ex-coworker just sent me this site's address by IM. Reading some of it I am reminded that not all idiosyncratic self-published writing on the Internet is in blog format. I know that's obvious, but with blogs getting all the heat and light lately maybe I was tending to forget it. The blog is one of those threshold-lowering catalyzers that frees up a lot of tongues and pens, but it is also, in some ways, a narrow and restrictive format, not suitable to prolegomenas on any past prolegomena like this one:
THIS BOOK IS A PHILOSOPHIC "WORK-IN-PROGRESS" AND IS BASED UPON MY OBSERVATIONS AND OPINIONS ABOUT LIFE. THEREFORE, ANYTHING THAT IS STATED HEREIN SHOULD NOT NECESSARILY BE CONSTRUED AS "FACT" (IF THERE BE SUCH AN IDEAL OR ENTITY).

The way to read this book is to jump around until you find something that makes sense. . . and then be glad.

I have carefully designed all the concepts in this book such that if you understand any one of them, you will never be able to understand the others when you come back to them - no matter what order you read the book in. (only kiding)

I'm sure the information in this book has only temporary value because, Life is bigger than the jar it "fits" in.

WARNING

Your philosophic comments are welcome however, comments on spelling or grammatical errors are only welcome if you want me to consider you a concept-void person who picks away at trivial details while letting worlds crash. In fact, just to tweek those nit-picking spell freaks out there who are too stupit to realize that concepts are more important than the transmission-medium, I have purposely peppered this book with mis-spelled words, typos and even half-baked sentences to give such a person the opportunity to up-grade their mind with the ability to ignore trivia. This will serve such a person, as it will free up mental compute cycles for more important things.

I know it's a lot for a quotation but I'll hide behind fair use!

Catching up at nickdenton.org I see he identifies a second "blog martyr" (after Steve Olafson):
Other blog martyrs Brian Sobalak writes in to remind me that Heather Hamilton of Dooce was fired when her company discovered she'd been bitching on her site. Here's Heather's post on the subject.
One of the most popular Google searches in my referer logs is for "Steve Olafson" so the meme of the fired blogger must have legs.

Since I did the original test installation of MovableType locally (on my PowerBook) a few months ago and have only fiddled with it since then, I decided to bite the bullet and install MT on my remote (Linux) server to reacquaint myself with the process, and to explore the 2.2 version of the software.

When I've completed this, ideally later today, I'll post my long-promised Radio vs. MovableType comparison entry. (Thanks to Bladam for some suggestions about what issues warrant attention in the comparison.)

Bet You Can't Read Just One
Agh. I've just tossed three hours down the blogosphere memory hole, clicking open links in new windows and following the trails of breadcrumbs. The incestuous cross-linking between blogs is a joy and a burden.

Nick Denton takes Traction to task for the buzzword bingo in their press release:
Oh no, the corporate wordmanglers have got hold of blogging. "Traction is a leader in next generation Enterprise Weblog software, delivering interoperable, inexpensive, rapidly deployable, open and easy to use tools for groups and teams to communicate, share, organize and link business information in context."
Someone from Traction contacted me after I mentioned them in this blog a week or so ago and offered to explain to me their product offering. I plan to take him up on it and haven't had time yet, but I will report back on what I learn when I do.
