My new blogchalking icon
Finally customized my blogchalking icon. I never liked that spiky haired face as my blogchalking icon. I kind of like the tourist icon and the anarchy one is nice for livejournal users (ducking!). custom blogchalk icon But I wanted to make one that kind of resembles me in my sloppy pixelated way.

I just grabbed the gif I was using, opened it in Fireworks, blew it up to about 1600% and started drawing a goatee and glasses on myself. Oh, and erasing a lot of the hair! The result is quite a good likeness if I do say so myself.

Let's make a Salon Blogs community
I'd would like to invite all Salon bloggers into my ... uh... Salon, here, this RFB channel called "salonika." Like the ancient greeks and decadent medieval university students, and cultured hostesses, let us drink together and contemplate the finer things in a free flowing exchange of ideas.

Specifically, I invite anyone at Salon blogs who wants to create a new category (which I can help you do if you'd like), which you don't have to render as HTML at your site unless you want to, and give it a Salon related name (call it blogsalon or salonika or whatever), and tell me about it.

I will subscribe to your feed in my aggregator.

Then, whenever you post something about Salon blogs, or about Salon, or about anything that you think other Salon bloggers might be interested in, check your salon category.

I will post it here.

If you have an existing category for this purpose, just tell me what it is! If you don't want your posts incorporated on this salonika channel, just don't tell me about them! It's that easy.

This is another experiment, but based on the recent comment threads, it's clear to me that no one is going to make a community for us. We have to do it ourselves. Duh.

Administrivia equivalent of getting new drapes
I'm going to take the non-blog-focused categories and put them in new clothes, gradually moving their branding away from RFB's revolutionary vigor toward more appropriate looks and feels.

Salonika should look like a Salon blog (and when I get the upstreaming syntax figured out, it should live at blogs.salon.com, but that's another matter.

Fireweaver will get a red stock theme for now, as I work on integrating it with the DreamweaverSavvy.com site. (I could just merge it onto the page but I want to try an RSS Monkey experiment to feed it in there.)

Knowhow is part of RFB, but should maybe have some more corporate, subdued, cobranded look. I will explore this in my abundant free time, currently leaving it looking like RFB.

Memewatch needs an entirely new work, but that whole project is in disarray, so I will park it in one of the "inspired by Mena Trott" Radio themes.

Metablog is cool for now, but eventually needs a good directory front end, as the main RFB archive.

Outspoken needs some very subded design, again possibly one of the CSS themes.

Radioactive, the Radio-specific RFB channel will keep the basic RFB design. When there are others like it, they may all get some kind of cobranding. Here, the path of least resistance is no change.

Syllabus likewise needs no change

x-pollen, the channel that aggregates all my RSS feeds (besides RFB) needs a design more in harmony with my personal X-POLLEN blog. For now, again, a CSS design will get me partway there.

Best RSS resources?
This should be an easy one, as I have plenty of bookmarks, but I'd like to throw this question out there: What are the best sources for RSS information online?

Here are some dredged quickly out of my browser's history:

There are definitely a other fairly obvious resources that should be added to this list (just don't have the URLs handy—next KM practice will be searching this site, then looking at my bookmarks, and finally some free-associative browsing), but this is a good start.

I can think of a few that are missing. Can you?
