Are the sweepstakes closed?
The Reverse Cowgirl was looking for a name for her blog's upcoming TV show. She may have settled on Oh, Susannah! If the contest is still open, I have a new idea. How about Frighten the Horses?

(Anyway, I like it better than my first suggestion, Ye Olde Pervert's Almanack.)

For what it's worth, and I know the Kowgirl likes to go along with the gag, but I don't think RCB is a pornblog, although pr0n is definitely one of the topics. A sex blog maybe, with a touch of news of the weird. Kind of a boingboing for that fraction of the population fascinated by sex (insert your percentage here), a BoneBone or SchwingSchwing or something like that.

Bloggers who snark, "Maybe I should write about sex to get more hits" don't realize that you have to write about whatever looms large in your own consciousness, and then if it happens to map up with the priorities of a lot of other minds, you get the hits. It's not just about inn-u-end-o.

Blogging my dog ears

All my life, I've turned down the page at the corner of the book I'm reading whenever a passage of writing strikes me in some particular way: as writing itself, or because it confirms or disputes some ongoing argument I'm having with myself. The gesture is vestigial, the first step in highlighting or underlining, annotating or footnoting. But the endnotes never come.

Often on re-reading a book I reencounter old dog ears. Most of the time I can tell what I was trying to save. In some books the dog ears come thick and fast, even overlapping at times.

I think now when I finish reading a book or when I pick up an old favorite, I might just comb through the dog ears, find the intended passages and post them in a new "dog ears" category in my personal blog.

Another dirty blog
What do you call a garden blog written by two people, discussing their plans, decision, thoughts, reflections, illustrated with digital images of the two gardens or the plants in them, with links to other gardening resources and the few (very few) other easily-findable examples of literate garden writing online?

Briggs and Rich call it True Dirt. I'm biased. I'm a fan of both the writers. But I'm really enjoying it, even though the extent of my gardening is delimited by the boundaries of the hammock.

We're still shaking down the design of the pages, but the site is now uncloaked, pinging weblogs.com, and blo.gs, and listed on my blogroll at RFB. Next stop Eatonweb.

By the way: nobody commented or emailed with any garden blogs when I posted a query about it last week. Rich did some searching at Google and Eatonweb and mostly found "no rain today" type stuff, and one interesting blog about bug-eating carnivorous plants. (He didn't send me the link, but I'll add it if I stumble upon it.)

Cowgirl instalanched, coattails for Salon bloggers: minimal
Dave Winer's link to RCB's take on Lisa Guernsey's article (why does Guernsey have two blog addresses, one at Salon and one not?) got picked up by Instapundit, who declared it "the final word" on the subject.

She's a rawk staw I tell you.

Meanwhile, I've been meaning to post about Halley's Comment and SRO and technorati and waypath and cityblogs, and so many other things, but sometimes you blog the blog and sometimes the blog blogs you.

Believe it or not
0d my first music CD ever. With many technological advances I am the consummate late adopter. I like to let other people beta test the new techne at premium rates and jump in when the thing has proven itself and become consumer-easy. I waited till I bought a computer that could burn CDs with a single click.

Using iTunes it was easy to come up with a 79-minute mix, and after ten minutes, the new platter was burned. It took me almost that long to write out the 22-song list longhand. Playing the cd in my stereo was/is a thrill (I'm on track 8 of the live playback — everything sounds fine.)

I used to make cassette mixes all the time, several a year at least, but it's been quite a few years now since my last one, and I buy a lot less new music.

Post with track listing.

Bush names bin Laden to head terror probe
Sometimes satire gets at a deeper truth than "objective journalism" ever manages:
WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 — President Bush today named Osama Bin Laden, a polarizing figure who is viewed with suspicion by some in the West but enjoys great cred in the Arab street, to lead an independent investigation into the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
