I sometimes wonder if linking isn't like sex. By my actions I touch you. Sometimes very intimately.
Is the relative paucity of males linking to females not unlike the early days of puberty with males grabbing each others penises under the covers on spend-the-nights? (What do girls do to each other, or in view of each other, when puberty begins? - I've never asked.) As the weblogging community matures will this "linking" mature?
What if our tools linked of their own volition?

Wow!
I've got to wonder if any of the spend-the-nights you went to were in prison. However, the comment on linking being like sex seems insightful.
We work so hard for theose links and most of the time they fail to be as fullfilling as we imagined, eh?
[Editor's Note: The comment appears valid, but the URL was an Amazon link irrelevant to the discussion and thus appeared to be an ad attempting to place itself for free on our home page. Thus, I have removed it. If it appears again, I will ban the comment poster's IP and automatically prevent it from being linked again. Ironically, if the book had been brought to my attention through legitimate means, I might have chosen to link to it and discuss it in another context. -xian]
Linking's not a same-sex crotch grab. For most recipients, it doesn't even register; they're not tuned in technorati or referral logs. For those who are aware, at most it's a tickle with a feather at the end of a long pole.
About boys linking to girls, we all link to things we understand and that interest us. The web hides direct gender indicators.
A better question: does blogging get you laid?
Or is linking less like sex and more like trying to get into the "in" crowd? Link to other blogs and be associated with them (or disassociated from them, if the feelings are strong and negative). Be swept up in the community that you admire. And if, as you point out, most people are unaware of others linking to them, then it's just like an unpopular kid "hanging on" to the cool crowd at school.
If linking *is* like sex, then I'd say it's more like an orgy ... in a public school ;-)
blogging gets tony pierce laid
Well at least he'd like you to believe that. Nothing Tony says on his site can be trusted. Don't forget.
