Tim Bray counters the 'fired for blogging' hype

In It’s Not Dangerous, Tim Bray extols the career benefits of blogging, primarily as a way to stay informed, establish expertise, and get noticed.

p.s.: His curly quotes that are being rendered as (a-with-circumflex, Euro symbol, trademark TM)? in my browser? Whose fault is that?

In Tim Bray's list of reason blogging is good for your career, he says, "If you’re an engineer, blogging puts you in intimate contact with a worse-is-better 80/20 success story"? What is a 'worse-is-better 80/20 success story'? Can anyone clue me in?
